Ros Conrad Dr Ros Conrad received her BMus and MMus (in composition) from the University of Pretoria, then sat for her DMus at the University of Durban-Westville (UDW), writing her thesis on chorus in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi.  She trained the NAPAC Chorus for 17 years, winning the Nederburg Opera prize for her direction of the chorus in Verdi's Nabucco. At UDW she lectured theory of music, compositional technique, orchestration, and choral literature and technique. She also accompanied students on the piano and harpsichord and directed the UDW choir and vocal ensemble.
She has served as external examiner for many universities and colleges as well as for the Matriculation Board and is currently on the UNISA music examination panel. She regularly adjudicates music competitions and festivals of instrumental, vocal and choral music as well as being a long-serving adjudicator for the Old Mutual National Choir Festival. 
Dr Conrad runs a private studio and is the Director of the Durban Symphonic Choir.




Liz Castleden (DSC Committee Member: Secretary)

Liz Works for Wise Eye – helping people of all ages to improve their reading skills.
She loves gardening, Soduko, reading, camping safaris.
She sang with the Errol Slater choir, St John’s (Pinetown) church choir and now helps with lead singing in St Elizabeth’s worship group.

She has been a member of the DSC since May 2006

Gillian Adams Gillian Adams

Gillian is a semi-retired physiotherapist specialising in aquatic therapy threaded with music.
She enjoys playing the piano (recently having completed her Grade 7 with the Royal College of Music), arranging small soirees at home when she & her musical friends entertain her guests.She also enjoys gardening, particularly organic vegetable gardening.
Ballet (as a four-year-old) introduced her to the world of music and sang in the choir at Eunice High School in Bloemfontein and later in Cantatas with a church choir in Pretoria.
She joined the DSC in November 2013

Jacqueline Anderson

Jacqueline Anderson (Member since inception)
Voice: First Soprano
Jacqueline is a retired nurse who did her nursing training at the Johannesburg General Hospital.
While there, she was a member of the Nurses' choir. She was also a member the Ian McLean Choir for a while.
Her hobbies are photography, music, researching subjects on computer, gardening and travelling.
She has been married for 54 years
Heather Brandon started the Durban Symphonic Choir in 1966 and she has been a member since!

Sheila Joubert

Sheila Joubert 

Voice: First Soprano

Sheila hails from a musical family and started serious piano lessons at the age of five and gave her first Church organ appearance at the age of 12 at St. Marks, Church, Hillary where she later progressed to being Church Organist at Hillary, Maclear, Bloemfontein, Bethlehem and pipe-organist at Pinetown Methodist Church. She has retired from the organ but continues with her singing, having conducted Choirs at all the Churches mentioned as well as being a Chorister of the Bloemfontein Amateur Operatic Society.Except for a few years when her mother was ailing, she has been Durban Symphonic Choir’s Treasurer since the inception of the governing Committee. She has been a member of the DSC since February 1992

Lyn Campbell

Lyn Campbell

Lyn is a teacher at Danville Park Girls High. She enjoys reading, gardening, travelling , singing, Retail therapy, time with family and friends. She has been married for 29 years and has 2 adult children.
She has sung in choirs since she started school in class 1- mainly at school and at church. When She was about 10 she was given the opportunity to audition for Napac's childrens chorus? Having got it in, she then sang in various Napac productions until she was pregnant with her first child. It then took her about 20 years to call Ros and ak if she could audition for DSC where she has been for the last few years.She joined the DSC in November 2008

Tracy Campbell

Tracy Campbell (DSC Committee – Membership Secretary)

Tracy is Rhodesian born and as been resident in SA since 1981. She has been married for 33 years and has 3 children. She works for a Chartered Accountant as receptionist/PA.
She loved acting at school and was in every play and choir each year until she left school. In addition to that she was involved in performing in the Forest Nativity (performed at night in the Eshowe forest and was performed for 52 years up until 1995). She participated the last year it was performed.
Her other interests include gardening, scrapbooking, card making and reading. She loves nothing better than enjoying good food/wine/sunshine and the company of her family on the deck of her home in Warner Beach.
She has been a member of the DSC since September 2013

Ida Jooste 

Voice Part: Second Soprano

Has sung in chiors and has done piano accompaniment for choirs for as long as she can remember: Port Natal School Choir, KZN Youth Choir, NAPAC Choir, (then) University (of Natal) Singers and Sweet Adelines, SABC Choir (Jhb) and then there was a big gap while she was out of the country. She now makes up for lost time by singing in both the Durban Symphonic Choir and Durban Chamber Choir.

Jill is a retired primary school teacher and has been actively involved in music her whole life, both teaching school music as well as several choirs (including the SABC choir in JHB under Richard Cock). She has been the musical director at St James for the past 17 years and has enjoyed directing church choirs on the Berea & beyond for many years.
She also worked for many year as the official pianist for the Royal Academy of Dance in Durban & Joburg.
Her hobbies include painting & sewing.
She is widowed but blessed with a large family: 4 childre, 9 grandchildren & 1 great grandson!
She has been a member of the DSC since 1984

Jo Day-Lewis
Voice: Second Soprano
Jo Day-Lewis is a retired Research Organic Chemist, with degrees in Chemistry and Physics.
She worked in Pulp +Paper Research Division and Iten Sugar Milling Institute for 30 years and is now firmly retired.
She has been divorced for the past 40 years, bringing up a daughter and son on her own.
Some of her interests include amateur dramatics (in Welkom and Springs before settling in Durban), and reading (Tape AIDS for the Blind for the past 15 years).
She started singing at school in England in the Chapel Choir. Then in various church choirs, including 22 years in St James, Morningside and…still there!
She has been a member of the DSC since 1970

Lindiwe Dlamini Lindi Dlamini
Voice: First Soprano
Lindi was born of an organist mom and choir conductor dad. With a musical family of composers and singers, she naturally started singing at an early age. She schooled at St Francis College, Marrianhill and matriculated at Oakford. Sacred Heart SS. She then trained at Adams College, specialised in Music and TCE Soshanguve and has an MA in Recreation and Tourism -UZ. She currently works for the KZN DoE as an ICT Advisor and Manager of a Vodacom foundation sponsored ICT Centre.  She is also a Board Member for the 'Museum with a Difference' in the Prof Mazisi Kunene foundation and serves as Secretary for the KZN and Dbn Catholic Music Committee. She first performed The Messiah with Royal Singing Zulus in 1978 and has since performed a number of different choral pieces.
She has been a member of the DSC since April 2011

Nancy Dunsmore

Nancy Dunsmore
Voice: 2nd Soprano
Nancy is a retired Senior Research Officer (Sugar Milling Research Institute for 31 years).
She enjoys reading (and was a reader for Tape Aids for the Blind), ribbon embroidery, flower arranging, and choral singing. She was a member of Toastmistresses International and competed in speech        contests at international level.
She sang in primary and high school choirs, then in the Glasgow Select Choir until emigrating to South Africa in May 1966. She is a founder member of the DSC having started with Heather in 1966. (She also sang in the Oriana Choir until it was disbanded).
Joined the DSC in September 1966.

Minnette Mohamed
Minnette Mohamed
Voice: First Soprano
Minette is a jack of all trades… graphic designer, nail tech and perfume specialist who lives in Durban North.
She has been singing since she could barely say a word and has been in every choir of every school she attended, various church choirs and her university choir.
She enjoys Lego building, swimming, arts & crafts.
She has been a member of the DSC since 2013.

Yoli Nompula
Voice: First Soprano
Yoli was born in the Eastern Cape.
She currently works at the University of KwaZulu Natal lecturing in Music Education and Arts and Culture. She enjoys singing,  dancing and travelling.
She has been in the music field for a while as a  conductor of choirs and adjudicator in both SA and the USA. She started singing at an  early age in school  choirs and later at  Holy Cross Anglican Church   Choir,  Umtata Cathedral Choir  SA, and University of Iowa Chamber Choir, USA.
She has been a member of the DSC since 2009.

Ros Pearson Ros Pearson
Voice: First Soprano
Ros is now retired but worked for the Africa radio news desk of the SABC in Johannesburg for 20 years before returning to Durban in 1997 as a freelancer.
She began singing in choirs at quite an early age. After singing in her very active school choir, she joined the SABC Choir under Richard Cock in 1980.She returned to Durban in 1997 and began singing in the Durban Symphonic Choir in 1998. She plays a little piano and guitar. Choirs and music have been important to her for most of her life.
She also loves going to the theatre, listening to music, following most sports on radio or TV and reading, as well as listening to music, fiddling around on my computer and doing a little baking (sometimes for a bit of pocket money). She also enjoy taking part in church activities when possible.

camilla rogers

Camilla Rogers (DSC Committee Member: web)

Recently completed her Honours degree in Drama and Opera Voice at UKZN, and her BA in Music and Drama Performance in 2014.
Married her best friend and partner in crime, together they have many hobbies; Mostly outdoors such as bass fishing, surfing, mountain biking, golf and traveling. 
She started vocal training with Ros in 2006, from 2013-2015 with Lionel Mkhwanazi and more recently with Vanessa Tait-Jones. She has completed her ATCL (2010) and LTCL (2013) with Trinity College and has sung in (and won) many eistedfords as well as performed as soloist with the KZNPO.
She originaly joined the DSC in 2006, left in 2010 and is now back 🙂

Merilyn was Peter Adams secretary at Adams Booksellers for 35years, although now retired has remained Treasurer of the 8.a Booksellers association, KZN branch.
Her hobbies include Writing (she is a published writer who has had various articles and short stories published in SA magazines, and the autor of “Praise the Lord in song”,a collection of hymn histories and background stories. She is a member of the SA Writers Club and served as Chairman for 2 years. She is a member of Northlands Women's Institute and group secretary of Victoria Group. She has also just taken on the Evelyn House Covenorship and is Group Adult Education Convenor.
She also sings with Northlands W.9 Choir and Durban North Methodist Church Choir. She has been a member of the DSC since 2006.

Wendy is a therapist and has had her own Clinic for the past 14 years: Pure Rejuvenation, Body and Skin Care Clinic, which is based at her home.She trained as a Body and Skin care therapist in 1992, and qualified with various Body and Skin Care diplomas.
She also works part time as a lecturer and assessor at two private skincare and body therapy colleges.
She is married and has two beautiful children.Michaela & Mallick.
She loves reading and running with her dogs
She joined the DSC in 2013 and prior to this sang in school choirs.

Pam is a Director of Music at Christ Church Pinetown, a Music Teacher and a Missionary.
She started singing in school choirs since Std: 5, taking lessons with Gwen Vickes & Colleen Philp.
She also participated in Eisteddfods and did grade exams to grade: 8.

She went to Welsh Eisteddfod with Constance Monroe choir to take part in Hangollen Eisteddfod, and also sang in Errol Slatter Chorale + Durban Chamber Choir.

Mabel is a business woman who for the past 23 years has been the main supplier of plastic tiles for cavity walls,supplying major construction companies throughout South Africa.
She is presently on the board of directors of the coastal horse care unit. In the past she has been the committee member of the Kloof & Highway SPCA for 22 years up to becoming the Chairperson of the Kloof & Highway SPCA from 2003-2007.
She has successfully completed a scorer's course with KZN cricket & followed the Proteas to 1999 World Cup – England and 2007 World Cup – West Indies.
She loves reading, theatre, cricket, formula one, reading, animal welfare & travel.
She has been a member of the DSC since October 2000

Yolanda Samson 

Voice: Soprano

Happily married with 2 loving dogs: Harley & Rover. My kids have paws. Graduated last year with my Honours Degree in Educational Management from Unisa. Currently a Masters student in English Literature at UKZN, Edgewood Campus. Other qualifications which I hold are: Bachelor of Social Science Degree majoring in Drama and Criminology, Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Honours in Educational Management. I am a certified Yoga, Pilates and Zumba instructor and a certified forensic investigator and beauty therapist. My dream is to own a Spa. I am a high school Drama teacher for the past 6 years at Chesterville Secondary School.My hobbies are biking, cycling, swimming, travelling the globe, yoga, pilates and reading. I love running, music, photography, real estate and fashion designing. I was an Au Pair in America, New York, a decade ago. Brand new to choir music. Joined DSC in March 2016 and loving every minute of it. I simply live to do what I love. I immerse myself in what I love on a daily basis.


Barbara Halsted

Joined this choir in September 2016. Durban born and currently married for almost 37 years.  I have 3 adult children and 6 grandchildren who are the delight of my life.  After my schooling at Westville Girls, I did Radiography and then much later I studied again, this time in the field of life coaching. My interests include cycling and running, quilting, piano and guitar, and gardening for which I have recently won Garden Of The Year.  My passion for music and singing has been a recent discovery but one that is filling my life with immense joy. I have been coached by Judith Hawthorne and been in one of her choirs, I also help with lead singing at my church.

Anne was born in Zimbabwe into a very musical family, everyone played an instrument or sang in a choir! She played the piano from the age of 7 and majored in music at The Teacher's College in Bulawayo where she played the cello in the college orchestra. She has taught piano and guitar over the years and was also a class teacher for 17 years. In 2005 she resigned from the classroom and joined her husband & son in the family business of Civil Engineers. She also has two daughters
She also runs her own choir of 20 strong at her church as well as playing the piano at Sunday service.
She loves swimming, tennis and gardening.

Linda is a home executive who enjoys singing, painting, gardening, reading & playing guitar.
She has enjoyed being apart of a choir for most of her life and was in the school youth choir when younger. She has been a member of her church choir for 26 years and takes part in praise and worship leadership.

Jackie Fairon

Jacqueline Fairon 
By training Jackie is a chartered secretary, but has officially retired now as she is way over 21!
Jackie is married with 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren ranging in age from 22 to 9. 
She first joined the choir in about 1990, but left for some years due to ill-health. She was reluctant to return as in the meantime, she had gone deaf and had difficulty hearing directors’ instructions and even other people’s conversations sometimes (which might be the reason, she says why she doesn’t follow instructions sometimes (that’s her excuse, Ros)!  She was enticed back by Marian to sing the Puccini Mass. She had lost about 20 kgs in weight while absent from choir & many people didn’t recognise her but it’s still the old Jackie!
Her hobbies are reading, music, movies, computer games, bridge and she used to do ballroom dancing.

She has sung in various Durban choirs for 17 years. She also sang in choirs in UK whilst working there including the Stratford-on-Avon Choral Society and Glasgow Cathedral Choral Society. She has been a member of the DSC since 2003.

She has sung in numerous choirs at school & university and attended singing lessons at the Petra Martine Hofs School of Music.

Ida was born in Amsterdam (Holland) and landed in Cape Town during August l951
She has always been a Home Executive" but involved with various organisations as a volunteer. She was widowed in 2000 and has lived in Doone Village Retirement Centre in Pinetown since 2010.She was diagnosed with Mavula Degeneration in 2008 but with treatment is still able to readand follow a music score athough she is not allowed to drive anymore kind fellow choristers have stepped in to provide her with transport so she considers herself blessed!She was involved in school choirs and Eistredfodds, followed by in church choirs, Westville Theatre Club Productions and Women's Institute Choirs.She also enjoyed 1year of voice training with Eve Boswell. She has been a member of the DSC since 2007.

Linda is an English teacher, currently at Keitsleigh Primary but was trained as a highschool teacher at Mpumamanga College of Education.She did her ATCL in piano and teaches piano lessons part time. She played the piano for Charlie Croft's restaurant for about 3 yrs as well as the Royal Hotel and played in the Westville theatre club band in the Razzle Dazzle show in 2013. She loves jazz & classical music and has been attending symphony concerts for 40 years. Her life has been dedicated to teaching and music. Qualifications: B.A. English and Education majors. H Ed Dipl. And B. Ed post graduate.

Angela Raw (Drummond) enl

Angela Raw

Angela is a housewife, married to a Civil Engineer and and has two married sons.
Her hobbies include playing music the piano and classical guitar. She also enjoys reading, sewing, weaving, wood carving, tennis (she plays twice a week), genealogy (she has written a book on her family), history,  painting, birding and gardening. She & her husband are keen mountaineers and have done many climbs here in South Africa as well as in Europe.
She was very keen on singing at school (Durban Girls' College), and was always in the choir and sang in eisteddfods.  She joined the Cantabile Choir under the direction of Constance Munro after leaving school and later started a Barbershop choir in Durban which she was part of for twenty years.

Gretel is a Teacher, Pensioner & Ex Nurse Sister. She serve on a number of committees, her favourite being the Epilepsy Foundation KZN.
Gretel's hobbies include music, piano playing, entertaining old age citizens with the piano, attending musical events e.g concerts, opera etc.hiking, tennis, outdoor activities(camping), bridge, scrabble, playing church organ.She enjoys Interacting with people, Church activities (bible studies,symposia), Watch television- particularly construction programmes.
Singing History: She sang in school/church choirs. Joined RSCM + German” Schutz Choir” (national).
She has been a member of the DSC since 1984.

Bea is an estate agent for Pam Golding.
She enjoys reading biographies and novels, listening to music, sewing when she has the time, spending time with family and reading the news on the web.
She is her daughter's biggest fan (Camilla Rogers who is also a member of the DSC). She also has son in Australia doing lifeguarding.
She has been married for 25 years & has lived in Ballito since 1988.

Carmen Conci

Voice Part: First Alto

I was born in Austria and moved here to Durban in 2002. I am currently writing my matric, I graduate high school soon! I am working towards moving back to Austria, Vienna, in the future to study media composition and applied music at the The University of Music and performing Arts Vienna. I really enjoy playing my core instrument – piano – very much, and I fiddle a bit on my guitar and cello for fun. I love playing music with friends and groups. My hobbies include ice skating, art, traveling, attending concerts and anything to with music. DSC is my first choir and I joined in September 2015. I absolutely adore this choir and every moment within. I attend with my mother – Natasha Conci – and the rest of my family are proud supporters of every concert DSC holds.

Ginny Cawdron

Voice Part: First Alto

Ginny was born in Harare Zimbabwe, where she completed schooling, before moving to Durban to study at Durban Technikon. She has sung in school chiors, concerts, musicals and a few eistedfords since standard 1. A highlight was singing in a Madrigal group that performed at weddings. Ginny the Soprano, Alto and Tenor recorders and the Guitar, singing with chrch groups and occasionally in restaurants. A rescent attempt to learn the piano ended when the teacher emigrated. (it is still on the to-do list).  Ginny learnt latin and french in high school – not as practical as afrikaans or zulu, but very useful for singing! Ginny has been singing in church / augmented choirs in Durban for the past 15 years, often encouraged by Jill Daverdson to join Durban symphonic. Ginny is married and self employed as a marketing communications consultant, her interest include singing, listening to music, readying, rowing, running, travel, food and wine and supporting the SPCA.

Brian Loveday

Brian qualified as a chemical engineer at Natal University and specialised (PhD) in mineral processing. He worked in Joburg for 27 years in applied research at Mintek (which is similar to the CSIR) and Anglo American Research Labs, where he was the Manager. He took an end-of-career job as Professor and Head of Chemical Engineering at Natal University. This has allowed him to continue his research interests well into retirement, as an Emiritus Professor. (He still goes in once a week and has postgrad students).
He has been married to Judy for close to 50 years and they enjoy bridge, gardening and trips abroad.
He has been singing in choirs for 50+ years and sang in the Johannesburg Bach Choir for about 20 years. He has been a member of the DSC since 1994

Ted Somerville

Ted Somerville
Voice: Second Tenor
Ted is a semi-retired associate professor of medical education, and he also practices as an anaesthetist. He learnt to sing in school, and was a member of the Kearsney College chapel choir. Later he sang with the Pietermarizburg Choral Society, the MacLean Singers, the NAPAC ad hoc chorus (his hairstyle is all that remains of one of Carmen's admirers), and the Royal School of Church Music – he used to sing the weekly evensong at St Paul's under Errol Slatter.
He cycles for exercise, teaches primary school children for investment in the future, and cultivates bonsai for relaxation. He is married to Estelle, who sings second soprano with the Bessie Williams Singers.

His hobbies include playing piano, reading & games
As a young boy he sang soprano solos. He has joined numerous church choirs as he moved around from place to place. Currently he is in the small church choir at New Germany Baptist Church. Unfortunately will be moving to Greytown to start community service end of February 2015. He will miss being in the choir, but hopes to rejoin once he hopefully moves closer to Durban again

Stavros is an attorney.
His hobbies include Opera and Antiques
He started singing in the school choir in 1964 and has sung ever since. He Joined the Napac ad hoc opera chorus in 1975, and when it went professional in the early 80s, he joined the DSC.

Dieter is Production Director of a company producing corrosion prevention systems for structural steel and steel pipelines
He started singing in the school choir at Hermannsburg School, was in the Durban Men's Choir for about 7 years and plays the trombone.
He enjoys Music, Woodwork, watching all sport (on TV!), tinkering in the garage/workshop. He played first division rugby for Durban University and Swimming at a much younger age!
He is married with 2 children and 5 grandchildren and his home language is German
He has been a member of the Durban Symphonic Choir since 2001.

He started singing in 1979 with the Westville Baptist Church choir. In 1981 he joined the Kloof Choral Society and participated in three presentations of Hayden's "Creation".

Dominique Ingala

 First Bass

Born in Ngoso (West DR Congo) and have been apart of Durban Chamber Choir, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and Saint Joseph Catholic Church chiors. Hobbies are Good music and sport: watching soccer. Work as an Electronic Engineer. I love technology! I spend a lot of my time with electronic engineering work and research, especially in the field of Radio Frequencies. But somehow I find myself connected with music. I do everything with it: work, study, prayer, relax… All with music. I'm more passionate about liturgical and church music. I am also very happy to be a member of the DSC after a friend invited me this year to join and sing for the 50th Anniversary of this choir. I always look forward to enjoying my time and concert program with DSC.

Simon Barff

Simon was born, raised, educated & married in England before coming to Durban in 1972.
He is a Cambridge University engineering graduate and worked for various civil engineering and building contractors during his career. He is now retired and works part time in  construction safety.
He has been married to Sue since 1963 and they have 3 children & 3 grandchildren
He enjoys music and theatre.
He sings with the Highwaymen Barbershop Chorus & Westville Theatre Club.
He has been a member of the DSC since January 2001

John Owen-Ellis

John Owen-Ellis
Voice: Second Bass
John is retired, but I still do some consulting work for refineries
He started playing the violin when he was 5 and still plays in pit orchestras occasionally. In 1978 he joined the (then) NAPAC Opera Chorus as a second Bass and did many operas and some bit parts with them.
He enjoys  reading, helping people, keeping in touch with friends and family all over the world.
He has been a member of the Durban Symphonic Choir since January 1992
